Williams Way Out Was On The Field: UCONN FOOTBALL

Here is a great article about one of Towers Finest.  I am just getting to know Julius through articles and reports but I have to say he exemplifies “In Pursuit Of Excellence”.

By Desmond Conner, The Hartford Courant, Conn.

Apr. 24–Former UConn defensive end Julius Williams always referred to football as the anti-drug growing up in his Decatur, Ga., neighborhood.

“I saw a lot of stuff in my neighborhood, man, urban neighborhood: drugs, crime, you name it,” Williams said by phone from Decatur Wednesday night. “I stayed away from that stuff and used football and the weight room to keep me focused.”

All you have to do is look at the ultra chiseled 6-foot-2, 252-pound Williams for verification of his work in the weight room.

And the fact he’s in position to be selected in this weekend’s draft, if not a high priority free agent for several teams, suggests Williams has steadily maintained the focus people like.

“Well, I’ve definitely been getting lots of phone calls from teams making sure they’ve got the right draft day [phone] number,” Williams said. “I get as many as four to five a day some days. About 16, 17 teams have called, so hopefully it means something good.”

One of the main questions NFL people are asking Williams is if anything has happened, mainly injury-wise, since UConn’s pro day in March.

Williams was one of the most impressive draft hopefuls there, and all but a handful of teams saw him post some nice numbers, leaping 41 inches on his vertical jump and racking 225 pounds 36 times on the bench, which he did faster than a squirrel runs up a tree.

His hops and strength equal the athleticism needed to play outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, which more teams seems to be playing.

It doesn’t matter to Williams. He just wants the opportunity to play on Sundays and the hometown Falcons are one of the teams showing interest.

“It’s a dream I’ve had ever since I picked up a helmet that I wanted to play in the NFL,” Williams said. “Just to be considered is an honor, but to hear my name called would really mean a lot to me.”
